Backpacking Trip Overview
This adventure takes us deep into the breathtaking North Rim of the Grand Canyon, presenting one of the most memorable and rewarding loop hikes in the area. Along the way, we’ll encounter picturesque streamside camps, impressive waterfalls, and the remnants of a massive landslide that altered the course of the Colorado River. Our hike includes a stunning section through slickrock narrows, and a layover day will allow us to unwind and fully appreciate the magic of this remarkable landscape.
Our journey begins with a descent to the Esplanade, a stunning camping area situated above the deeper layers of the canyon. From there, we’ll hike past Thunder River, which dramatically bursts forth from the mountainside, and follow Tapeats Creek until we reach the Colorado River. After exploring a segment of the Colorado, we’ll head back up Deer Creek, where we’ll set up camp to explore its beautiful terraces, narrows, and the breathtaking Deer Creek waterfall. The next two days will be dedicated to our return to the North Rim, filled with stunning views and unforgettable moments.
Itinerary
- Day 1: Our classic Grand Canyon backpacking adventure starts with a five-hour shuttle to the North Rim. Once we arrive, we embark on a 4-mile hike downhill to the expansive slickrock terrace known as the Esplanade. We’ll camp at the edge of the Esplanade for our first night, enjoying sweeping views of the inner Grand Canyon.
- Day 2: On the second day, we’ll hike around 6 miles, descending 3,200 feet into Surprise Valley. Our journey begins with a steep descent through debris from a massive landslide that altered the Colorado River’s course. Along the way, we’ll pass Deer Spring, a beautiful waterfall cascading from a cliff that serves as the source for Deer Creek. We’ll continue our descent, dropping another 1,000 feet into Deer Creek Valley, where we’ll set up camp. This picturesque spot allows us to explore the enchanting Deer Creek Narrows and hike to Deer Creek Falls, where the creek flows from a narrow Tapeats Sandstone canyon, forming a stunning waterfall next to the Colorado River.
- Day 3: After a hearty breakfast, we’ll hike 5.2 miles upstream along the Colorado River to the impressive Tapeats Rapid. From there, we’ll follow Tapeats Creek upstream, where stream crossings and some exposure add excitement to the hike. The trail alternates between flat, sandy stretches next to the creek and short, steep climbs over Hakatai Shale. Eventually, we’ll reach the Upper Tapeats camp at the junction of Tapeats Creek and Thunder River, nestled in a beautiful cottonwood riparian zone. After setting up camp, we can explore upstream along the rushing waters of Thunder River to Thunder Spring, where a waterfall erupts from fissures at the Muav Limestone and Bright Angel Shale contact.
- Day 4: This day is a layover day, allowing us to fully appreciate the grandeur of the area, especially if we’re on a six-day trip. Adventurous participants can join the guide for a spectacular day hike upstream, off-trail along Tapeats Creek. This remote and stunning canyon may become a highlight of our journey. Once back at camp, we can swim, read, explore, or simply relax and soak in our surroundings.
- Day 5: On the fifth day, we’ll hike 6 miles back past Thunder Spring and up through Surprise Valley. Our journey continues as we ascend through the Redwall to reach our Esplanade camp from the first night, gaining 3,000 feet in elevation.
- Day 6: On our final day, we’ll hike 4.8 miles, gaining 2,200 feet as we retrace our steps from Day 1. This means crossing the Esplanade again and climbing through the Canyon’s upper rock formations to reach the trailhead. After spending five or six days below the rim, we’ll return to civilization with a fresh perspective on the Grand Canyon.
