Itinerary

Start: Begin your hike at the Grandview Trailhead, located at Grandview Point on Desert View Drive. Originally built in the 1890s for copper mining, this historic trail offers a steep and rugged descent with stunning panoramic views of the canyon right from the start.

Coconino Saddle: After about 1 mile of switchbacks, reach Coconino Saddle, a perfect spot to rest and enjoy sweeping views into the canyon. This saddle marks a transition in the trail, where it becomes steeper and more rugged as you continue downward.

Horseshoe Mesa: Continue descending for another 1.5 miles to arrive at Horseshoe Mesa, a distinctive mesa shaped like a horseshoe and the site of old mining ruins. Here, you can explore remnants of the historic Last Chance Mine and take in breathtaking views of the Inner Canyon and the Colorado River in the distance. This plateau offers a great spot for lunch and exploration.

Return: After exploring Horseshoe Mesa, begin the challenging ascent back to the Grandview Trailhead. The steep climb demands effort, but the rewarding views and sense of adventure make it a classic Grand Canyon experience.
