The Desert Hiking Company

At The Desert Hiking Company, our mission is simple: to guide our guests on intentional, reflective adventures that go beyond the typical hiking and backpacking experience. We believe that nature is a powerful healer, and through mindful exploration, we help you connect with the environment in a way that nurtures mental well-being and personal growth.

What sets us apart from other tour companies is our focus on creating communal and reflective journeys. Our adventures are designed to help you set intentions, process individual experiences, and overcome the challenges that come with wilderness travel. While we guide you into some of the most awe-inspiring landscapes, we also encourage you to tap into the natural therapy of hiking and backpacking.

The goal isn’t just to complete a trail or reach a destination—it’s about what you take away from the experience. We believe the lessons you learn, the wisdom you gain, and the resilience you develop in the wilderness can be integrated into your daily life, helping you navigate the “real world” with a renewed sense of strength, balance, and clarity.

Join us on an adventure that’s about more than just the journey—it’s about connection, healing, and growth.

kory

Kory L. Kirchner

Kory grew up in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona and went on his first of many backpacking trips in the Grand Canyon at 11 years old, nearly crying on the steep hike out. His grandparents sent him off canoeing in the mosquito-infested northwoods of Canada each summer, where he learned the art of wilderness travel, tolerance for discomfort, and eventually guided canoe trips himself.

He studied geology with many great professors at Northern Arizona University, The University of Texas at Austin, and The University of New Mexico. His geologizing has taken him all across the Western United States, including Alaska and Hawaii, the Mediterranean Region, South Georgia Island and the Scotia Sea, and of course, the Grand Canyon, thanks to generous support from the National Science Foundation and universities. Beyond his Flagstaff, AZ backyard, he has guided, hiked, paddled, climbed, skied, and cycled in Southern Utah’s national parks, Death Valley, Baja California, El Rio Grande, the Gila Wilderness, the Rocky Mountains, the Sierra Nevada Range, the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, the Cascade Range, Canada’s Hudson Bay watershed and Rockies, the Alaskan Arctic and Subarctic, Chilean and Argentinian Patagonia, Iceland, the Alps, New Zealand, Colombia, and Madagascar. He has yet to find a place on earth more awe-inspiring than the Grand Canyon and looks forward to blowing your mind with geologic knowledge on a DHC trip!

kenton

In addition to backpacking and camping, his adventures include rock climbing, exploring slot canyons in southern Utah, mountain biking, and bagging 14ers in Colorado’s San Juan Mountain Range. Kenton is a trail runner and former pilot, and spent roughly five years writing and photographing for the award-winning Omaha World-Herald out of his hometown of Omaha, Nebraska (He is more than happy to help you bring your photography ‘up a notch, or two,’ while on a hike, just ask!).

Kenton made his way west to Arizona in autumn of 2011, and the high desert of Flagstaff quickly became home. Life took Kenton to ‘Upper Left, USA,’ where for three years he and his wife Danielle, and pup, Natasha, lived in Bellingham Washington. Sea kayaks and mountaineering filled in nicely for desert stargazing, yet the pull of ‘home’ proved too strong in the summer of 2024 he boomeranged back home to Flagstaff.

Kenton believes in the transformative powers of our natural world and has seen its healing capabilities in the field on more occasions than he can count. He looks forward to utilizing his years of trip leading, well-rounded knowledge of the region, and guiding experience to help you to have a memorable and life-changing experience.

Sam has also contributed his expertise to the Whale Foundation, offering free, confidential counseling services to the Grand Canyon river guiding community. Through this work, he has helped guides address the unique challenges and uncertainties that come with a life on the river, fostering mental well-being within a tight-knit community.

In his new role as a wilderness guide, Sam blends his therapeutic expertise with the healing power of nature. He believes that time spent in the wilderness—whether hiking through dense forests, sitting by a mountain stream, or navigating a challenging trail—offers unparalleled benefits for mental well-being. Backpacking, in particular, encourages mindfulness by slowing down and reconnecting with the present moment. It fosters resilience through physical challenges, promotes self-reflection, and builds deeper emotional connections with others.

A lifelong hiker and outdoor enthusiast, Sam draws on the lessons he’s learned through backpacking—such as self-reliance, responsibility, community, and connection—to guide his approach. Whether on the trail or in a counseling session, Sam creates space for participants to grow, heal, and connect—both with nature and with themselves. His goal is to empower individuals by combining therapy, adventure, and ecology, helping them discover new paths toward personal growth and well-being.
